Assessments

At Child and Adolescent Psychology Services (CAPS) we offer Educational and Autism assessments.

Educational Assessments

Educational assessments provide insight into your child’s unique learning profile. It is a way to objectively measure your child’s abilities therefore enabling you and their educators to tailor learning experiences that match your child’s abilities and provide an effective individual learning program.

Assessments will determine:

  • Your child’s individual learning profile (strengths and weaknesses)
  • Any specific learning difficulties that may be present
  • Areas of intellectual giftedness
  • School readiness.

Assessment of your child involves both cognitive and educational testing in order to understand his or her abilities and areas where she or he may experience difficulties. The tests consist of a variety of questions, puzzles, drawings, stories, and games.

What do psychological or cognitive tests measure?

Cognitive tests measure abilities such as:

  • Attention
  • Memory
  • Auditory and Visual processing
  • Language skills
  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Planning ability
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Perceptual and Spatial skills.

What do educational tests measure?

Educational tests measure academic skills such as:

  • Reading
  • Written expression
  • Spelling
  • Mathematics
  • Academic fluency (speed of reading, writing
    and calculating)
  • Listening comprehension
  • Oral expression skills.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Child and Adolescent Psychology Services provide assessment and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The assessment is a comprehensive process which will provide an accurate picture of the child’s functioning and will be used to recommend appropriate interventions.

Children with autism display characteristic difficulties in communication and social reciprocity accompanied by restrictive or repetitive behaviours. It is important to note that symptoms of Autism will vary in degree and type across individuals therefore treatment plans need to be focussed on an individual’s specific needs.
